Adinkra Symbols: History & Cultural Significance

Adinkra symbols originated with the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and have been used for centuries as a visual language. You'll find me using Adinkra charms and pendants in many pieces; necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and suncatchers.

Traditionally, they were stamped on cloth worn during important ceremonies, especially funerals, to convey messages about life, morality, and social values.

Each symbol carries a unique meaning—such as wisdom, unity, strength, or resilience—and reflects proverbs, historical events, and philosophical concepts. Today, Adinkra symbols are celebrated globally as expressions of African identity and cultural pride.
